For the past 32 years Robert Moshal, or Bob, as more people are apt to call him, has been selling freshly cut Christmas Trees from his lot just east of Jones Street off Lakeshore Road West in Bronte. What began as an opportunity to bond with his son, has turned into a Christmas tradition for many Oakville families.

“We started back in 1982,” says Bob with a big grin. “I bought a 100 trees on consignment from a local farmer, and we sold the lot and paid the farmer the full $500.00.”

“It helped to pay for my son’s education, which in some years cost $60,000, especially when he attended university in the US. After Western, he went to Boston, and finished off at Chicago. He’s “Robert JR” an Oral Surgeon now living well in Boston,” states Bob with pride in his voice. “I’m hoping to make it down for Christmas.”

What started off as a fairly basic operation grew to the point where it wasn’t unusual to sell 1400 trees a season; however, when condos decided that real trees posed a safety hazard, sales dropped. This year he expects he’ll sell 800 to 900 trees.

Bob is extremely proud of his Christmas tree operation. Over 50 percent of the trees come from Ontario, with the rest coming from Nova Scotia or North Carolina. He buys quality trees that are freshly cut. The trees are all staked so that buyers can see what they are buying.

The selection of trees are: Spruce, Scotch Pine, Balsam, White Pine, Fraser Fir, Nordsmen Fir, and Blue Spruce. Prices range from $35.00 for a 6 foot traditional spruce tree to $100.00 for a 7 to 8 foot Nordsman Fir. He does bring in a few custom trees such as a 24-foot Spruce that fetched $1,000.00. Also Bob does deliver, and will even stand the tree in your home.

Once you step onto Bob’s Christmas Tree lot, the aroma of fresh pine needles fills the air. It is the scent of Christmas.
