In need of a little adventure or mystery in your life? Look no further: The Oakville Historical Society is hosting an evening with Maureen Jennings, acclaimed author and screen-writer, on May 15 at St. John’s United Church in Oakville.

But who is Maureen Jennings? She is the woman behind The Murdoch Mysteries, an award-winning television show, movie series and book series, as well as the author of a multitude of other books and screenplays.

The show, set in Victorian-era Toronto, centres around the life and cases of detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson). In its seventh season, it’s safe to say that audiences are captivated by The Murdoch Mysteries.

Jennings, although an Englishwoman by birth, now calls Canada home. After emigrating here as a teenager, Jennings set off on her long and varied career. Said Jennings in an email interview, “I’ve always dabbled (in writing). I read books constantly, but then decided to take it more seriously. I did bits of poetry, wrote two plays that were professionally produced, and then turned to novel writing. Now I have 11 books out, and two screen writing credits.”

Currently working on her latest book due in 2014, No Known Grave will be the third book in the ‘Season of Darkness’ series. But far from relaxing, she still wants to do more, and is toying with the idea of writing more screenplays.

“Out and about, I am always alert to what grabs me, whether it’s something happy and wonderful or sad and depressing,” says Jennings. “There are interesting stories everywhere, on the street, in the news, people talking.”
