On Sunday, May 24 the Town of Oakville will be holding a noise testing clinic to give motorcycle owners a chance to test their bikes for decibel levels, free of charge. Under Oakville’s Noise By-Law 2008-098 motorcycles cannot operate in Oakville if it emits any sound exceeding 92 decibels (dBA) from the exhaust when it’s idling.

Individuals who violate the Noise By-law could face a minimum fine of $400. – Town of Oakville

“Most motorcycles will comply with the by-law,” said Jim Barry, manager of by-law services. “Owners should only be concerned if their motorcycle has been modified or had other after-market exhaust systems installed.”

Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the main parking lot at Town Hall, by-law enforcement officers will check for excessive noise emissions and let motorcyclists know how they can bring their bikes up to industry and community standards. Decibel readings will be taken at 50 centimetres from the exhaust by a sound level meter.

Motorcycle owners whose bikes are not compliant with the Town of Oakville Noise By-law will not be issued a ticket at the clinic; however, enforcement is in effect over the course of the riding season.
