The Halton District School Board will be hosting an Oakville evening session in April that are designed to help parents/guardians further support their children’s mathematics development by learning the ‘Growth Mindset’ approach.

There will be discussion around current research into mathematics education and how parents/guardians can support their child(ren) in developing positive attitudes toward math. Each session runs from 7-8 p.m. at the following location:

Monday April 20, 2015 White Oaks S.S. North in Cafeteria

Parents/guardians are invited to attend any of three sessions, where they will be provided with practical strategies to support children in developing confidence and capability in mathematics. In particular, they will learn about the ‘Growth Mindset’ approach, which focuses on the idea that students can improve their numeracy through hard work and dedication.

This is the second round of parent math sessions, part of the Board’s ongoing commitment to providing learning opportunities for parents/guardians. In the fall, more than 500 parents/guardians participated in learning events offered at the annual Parent Involvement Committee Conference, as well as the adaptive learning program DreamBox evening sessions.

“Parent engagement is a critical focus for our board,” explained Terri Blackwell, the Board’s System Principal of School Programs. “We know our parents play an important role in their child’s attitude toward, and success with, mathematics.”
