Oakville will continue to be able to better plan for and execute local infrastructure projects thanks to the federal government’s gas tax fund.
As part of the New Building Canada Plan, the renewed federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) provides predictable, long-term, stable funding for Canadian municipalities to help them build and revitalize their local public infrastructure while creating jobs and long term prosperity.
Each year, the federal Gas Tax Fund provides over $2 billion to municipalities across the country in each province and territory. The federal Gas Tax Fund is making a difference in communities across Canada.
Funding through the federal Gas Tax Fund is provided up front, twice a year, to provincial and territorial governments or to the municipal associations that deliver this funding within a province.
Because the federal Gas Tax Fund is flexible, allowing communities to choose projects locally and prioritize them according to their needs, the up-front funding provides greater certainty for municipalities to plan and carry out projects.
“Through my experience on Oakville Town Council, I saw first hand the benefits of stable and predictable funding to municipalities,” said Pam Damoff, MP for Oakville North Burlington. “Public investments in areas like infrastructure are crucial to drive economic growth and strengthen the middle class. Through the federal Gas Tax Fund the Government of Canada is providing communities like Oakville and Burlington with flexible, predictable funding to address their biggest priorities..”
The Government of Canada is committed to providing Canadian families with modern and efficient infrastructure that have a positive impact on their lives. By making smart investments in local infrastructure, we can build roads, transit and water systems that make a difference in our communities.
“The Gas Tax fund ensures that municipalities like Oakville can invest in long-term infrastructure projects, encouraging sustainable growth and creating jobs in our community. Upgrading Oakville’s transit system will help make Oakville a more livable, environmentally-conscious community.” John Oliver, Member of Parliament for Oakville.
The Government of Canada’s first instalment of the annual federal Gas Tax Fund allocation for municipal infrastructure is now available for communities across Ontario. This year, Ontario communities will receive a total of $3,873,734,778 with $5,549,189 in dedicated funding for Oakville. These investments represent much more than concrete, pipes, roads and bridges: they can connect people to their communities and allow them to be active participants, socially and economically.
Specific allocations to municipalities are determined through federal-provincial-territorial Gas Tax Fund agreements. Allocations for 2019-2024 will be based on Census 2016 data.
At more than $2 billion each year, the federal Gas Tax Fund provides predictable, long-term funding to help Canadian municipalities build and revitalize public infrastructure. The Government of Canada is proud to help municipalities build the Canada of the 21st century and ensure a high quality of life for generations to come.
