The Halton Regional Police Fraud unit is warning the community about a rug selling scam occurring in the area.
Several Oakville residents have been contacted by an unknown male claiming to represent the owner of a reputable local rug sale business. Four complaints have been reported to the police in the last week. If this does happen, a plan of action is to ask for a number to call the person back, or to call the store directly.
The male expresses an urgency in selling high end rugs as he has to leave immediately to attend to an ailing relative overseas.
The male makes arrangements to meet at the potential buyer’s residence.
The rugs are described to the potential buyer as genuine, high-end, hand woven rugs, valued in the $1000.00’s of dollars when in fact they are inexpensive machine-made rugs. If a sale is completed, cash is the only method of acceptable payment.
Halton Police have confirmed the male attempting to sell these rugs is not affiliated with the reputable business they state they are representing.
Buyer Beware…If it seems too good to be true…it most likely is!
