Oakville Fire is joining fire departments across Ontario today in support of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s “12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety” campaign to raise awareness of the additional hazards the holiday season can bring and the steps residents can take to stay safe.

“December is traditionally one of the most dangerous months of the year for fatal fires,” said Fire Chief Lee Grant. “We’re asking Oakville residents to be aware of potential hazards and practice fire safety at home to help keep the holidays safe for everyone.”

This is the fourth year of the annual campaign and the first year Oakville Fire will be using social media to share daily fire safety tips with residents.

“We want to engage with residents in new and fun ways,” said Oakville’s chief fire prevention officer Gary Laframboise. “The holiday fire safety messages are easy to remember and even easier to share.”

Day 1: Water fresh trees daily.
Day 2: Check all lights before decorating.
Day 3: Make sure you have working smoke alarms.
Day 4: Protect your family – carbon monoxide alarms are now required by law.
Day 5: Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely.
Day 6: Use extension cords wisely.
Day 7: Give space heaters space.
Day 8: Go flameless (use battery-operated candles).
Day 9: Keep matches and lighters away from children.
Day 10: Watch what you heat.
Day 11: Ask smokers to smoke outside.
Day 12: There’s more to responsible drinking than taking a cab home.

These tips, and links to more information, will be posted on the Town of Oakville Facebook page and on Twitter account @townofoakville starting Tuesday, December 9. Residents who share or retweet the tips will have a chance to win one of 12 home fire safety kits which include a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, and a flameless candle. One prize kit will be awarded randomly each business day (Monday to Friday) from December 9 to 24.
