Executive Director, Miss Lillian H. (Joy) Parsons
Halton Healthcare announced today that former Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) Executive Director, Miss Lillian H. (Joy) Parsons passed away on Friday, December 25, 2015.
Miss Parsons began her career in Oakville after nursing training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London and graduate work in the United States. She took on the role of Obstetrical Supervisor at Oakville’s temporary hospital on First Street in 1949. Over the years she held more responsibilities and became Executive Director of the newly built OTMH, a post she held for 36 years. Miss Parsons retired in 1987 but remained a tireless advocate both for OTMH and for healthcare in Oakville.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of a towering figure in our organization’s history. For almost four decades Miss Parsons was the guiding light of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, ensuring our community got the healthcare it needed and deserved. With her passing we have lost her presence but not her vision, which continues to inspire our entire organization. We will honour her memory through our continued commitment to the health and wellbeing of our community. We extend our sincerest condolences to her friends and family during this difficult time," stated Denise Hardenne, President and CEO of Halton Healthcare.
On the occasion of her retirement, OTMH established the Lillian H. Parsons Bursary. This fund provides annual bursaries to assist children of OTMH staff with their post-secondary education. To-date, over $200,000 in bursaries have been awarded. Miss Parsons was actively involved in the evaluation of the applications and attended the Hospital’s Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony to personally congratulate each recipient.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Turner and Porter (Peel Chapel) 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, Ontario, L5B 1M8. Phone 905-279-7663. In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be made to the Oakville Hospital Foundation Nursing Education Fund.
