On August 14th Liana Palmeria-McIvor joined the municipal race for the position of Oakville Town Councillor for Ward 4. Ward 4 being bounded by 16 Mile Creek to the East, Bronte Creek to the West, QEW to the South, and Oakville’s northern border. In total there are 56,000 residents in the ward.

Liana is a life long resident of Oakville. Her mom was a nurse, her father was a local police man, and she grew up what is now called College Park. When asked why she wants to represent Ward 4, she cites her three C’s: Communicating, Connecting, and Creating Community. As a local advocate, as well as a professional psychotherapist for the past 20 years Liana believes that these experiences have provided her with the necessary skills to allow her to work effectively with council and constituents.

“My professional work involves helping people overcome their challenges and realize their potential. I want to do the same for our town,” says Liana Palmeria-McIvor.

Her main issues centre around the protection of the Merton Lands, safety for pedestrians along Highway 5 especially close to the hospital, and getting e-bikes off the sidewalks. All these issues can be rallying points for the community, and she wants to ensure that residents have easy access to information. Publishing E-News letters in a timely fashion, and being readily available to constituents is critical for Liana.

Oakville organizations that she has been involved with include: Darling Home for Kids (respite and care centre for medically fragile children), Halton Women’s Place (women’s shelter), Women of Halton Action Movement, Zonta Club of Oakville (advocating for women and children), International Women’s Day Dinner and Oakville Chamber of Commerce. She has worked as the clinical coordinator and counsellor for The Counselling Network with the Halton District School Board, as well as as a volunteer therapist with a Halton Regional Police Officer for 2 years, running a support group for parents with difficult teenagers.

Liana has raised her family in Glen Abbey where she continues to live with her husband and their three children.
