On Friday, July 31, after more than 10 years of anticipation and four years of construction, Halton Healthcare achieved substantial completion of its new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) on time and on budget, which means construction of the state-of-the-art hospital is now complete.
“We are incredibly excited about achieving this significant milestone in our journey to the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and extend our thanks to the thousands of individuals who contributed to the construction of this state-of-the-art building,” said Denise Hardenne, President and CEO, Halton Healthcare.
With the achievement of this major milestone Halton Healthcare now has full access to the building and will spend the next four months preparing the 1.6 million square foot hospital for opening on December 13, 2015.
“The months ahead are going to be fast-paced, exciting and challenging as we ready ourselves for the next chapter of caring for our community,” says Hardenne. “There is a tremendous amount of work still required to ensure the hospital is ready for opening.”
Preparing the new hospital for occupancy involves extensive cleaning, setting up workstations and equipment, stocking supplies, testing and commissioning of building systems and technology, and orientation and training of more than 3,500 staff, physicians and volunteers in a facility that is three times the size of their current workspace.
While under construction, the project was known as the New Oakville Hospital; however, Halton Healthcare has confirmed that the historic Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital name will be transferred to the site on December 13, 2015 when the doors at the new hospital open and simultaneously close at the historic 327 Reynolds Street location.
A comprehensive communications campaign will be launched this fall to help inform the community of this significant change in access to care. As part of the campaign, members of the public will also be invited to have a sneak peak of the new hospital in October during a series of planned Open Houses. Dates will be announced in September.
“While the new hospital may look open from the outside, there is still more work to be done to ensure the building is prepared to receive patients when it opens in December,” concluded Ms. Hardenne. “Residents seeking medical care from our hospital should continue to come to the existing hospital location at 327 Reynolds St. both for scheduled appointments and for emergency care.”
