.OakvilleNews Site Change Log

2013-April-12

  1. Removed horizontal line between widgets, played with spacing:
    In <inline_pre>http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/themes/newyorker3/style.css, changed
    <block_pre>.widget {
    margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px;
    border-bottom: 1px solid black;
    }
    to
    <block_pre>.widget {
    margin: 0px 0px 5px 0px;
    }

2013-April-12

  1. Added “tweets” wdiget class to style.css
  2. Replace Twitter Badge widget with Jetpack Twitter widget in Home Sidebar

2013-April-12

  1. On Google AdSense account (nolan.a.machan@gmail.com) created:
    • “AdSense Display Ad – 300×250” – Google AdSense – 300×250
    • “AdSense Display Ad – 468×60” – Google AdSense – 468×60
  2. Placed AdSense Display Ad – 468×60″ in a widget in “NY – Banner Advertisement” in “Appearance > Widgets > Home – Main Column”
  3. Placed “AdSense Display Ad – 300×250” in a widget in “NY – Banner Advertisement” in “Appearance > Widgets > Home – Sidebar”, “… > Post – Sidebar ” and “… > Category – Sidebar “
  4. Edited style.css:
    • Added vertical line between sidebars and main column.
    • Added horizontal lines between sidebar elements
    • Reason for both above changes: Nolan felt there was not enough definition between the ads and content
  5. Added AdRotate code to Left & Right Banners
    • Changed code in header.php: stripslashes() to eval(); dangerous but needed.
    • <block_pre><:?php $bannerheaderleft = get_option(‘newyorker_bannerheaderleft’); echo stripslashes($bannerheaderleft);
      to
      <block_pre><:?php $bannerheaderleft = get_option(‘newyorker_bannerheaderleft’); eval($bannerheaderleft);
    • <block_pre><:?php $bannerheaderright = get_option(‘newyorker_bannerheaderright’); echo stripslashes($bannerheaderright);
      to
      <block_pre><:?php $bannerheaderright = get_option(‘newyorker_bannerheaderright’); eval($bannerheaderright);
  6. Added to AdRotate:
    • “Kerr Street Cafe 2” Expiry: July 5, 2013

2013-April-11

  1. On Google AdSense account (nolan.a.machan@gmail.com) created “Banner Ad” – Google AdSense – 180×150
  2. Put the following code in “Appearance > CPanel > Left Header” area:
    <block_pre><script type=”text/javascript”><!–
    google_ad_client = “ca-pub-3662948554989210”;
    /* Banner Ad */
    google_ad_slot = “8621638481”;
    google_ad_width = 180;
    google_ad_height = 150;
    //–>
    </script>
    <script type=”text/javascript”
    src=”http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js”>
    </script>
  3. Removed above code from “Appearance > CPanel > Left Header” because this page will render the code in the banner (even in Preview mode) and would count as a publisher impression (a Google Policy no-no)
  4. Added the above code to a “NY – Banner Advertisement” in “Appearance > Widgets > Home – Main Column”
  5. Deleted all references to previous Google AdSense account in “Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets”
  6. Added to AdRotate:
    • “Life Is Sales Conference” Expiry: April 16, 2013 @ 12:00
    • “Core 1” Expiry: July 4, 2013
  7. De-activated Kontera In-Text Ad Plugin
    Reason: Avoid any possible conflict with Google AdSense

2013-April-10

  1. Re-activate AdRotate plugin
  2. Remove following code in Left Header and Right Header in “Appearance > CPanel > Header > Left Banner” and “… > Right Banner”:
    <block_pre><a href=”http://www.facebook.com/CircusChocolates” target=”blank”><img src=”http://oakville-news.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Circus-Logo.jpg” scale=”0″ height=”89px” width=”158px” alt=”Circus Chocolates & Ice Cream”></a>
    and
    <block_pre><a href=”http://www.kerrstreetcafe.com/Kerr_Street_Cafe/Home.html” target=”blank”><img src=”http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/kerrstreetlogo_260x150.inverted.jpg” height=”89px” width=”154px” alt=”Kerr Street Cafe – cafe market espresso catering” scale=”0″></a>
    Reason: Re-activating AdRotate plugin
  3. Replace AdRotate widget in Main sidebar
  4. Disable option “Settings > Discussion Settings > Before a comment appears > An administrator must always approve the comment”
    Reason: Akismet spam filter should take care of this for the most part.
    Item to Followup: Make sure the spam filter still works properly.

2013-April-05

  1. Added Kontera Ad code to site.
    1. Tried to download latest Kontera WordPress plugin v3.0 from Kontera’s site. Returned an error of “Content Not Found.”
    2. Tried adding Kontera plugin directly from oakvillenews WordPress Dashboard, Plugins>Add New; the latest plugin version listed is 2.2, when Kontera’s site says the latest plugin is version 3.0. Installed it anyway. Got a WordPress error when trying to Activate the plugin. Uninstalled Kontera plugin.
    3. Downloaded Kontera plugin v2.9 from Kontera website instead. This version seems to have installed and activated successfully.
    4. In Settings>Kontera Settings, set:
      • Kontera Publisher ID (Value of dc_PublisherID): 223562
      • Block ContentLinks from pages:
      • Kontera link colour (Value of dc_AdLinkColor): blue
      • Block ads from new posts for: 0 Days
      • Block ContentLinks from categories: None selected
      • Enabled option: “Enable ContentLinks Ads only on posts “
  2. In <inline_pre>http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/themes/newyorker3/style.css, added:
    <block_pre>/* Style for an inline pre-formatted text for code & filenames */
    inline_pre {
    font-family: monospace;
    font-size: 90%;
    }/* Style for an inline pre-formatted block of text for code */
    block_pre {
    font-size: 90%;
    line-height: 12px;
    position: relative;
    left:20px;
    }/* Style to highlight followup items */
    followup {
    color: red;
    font-weight: bold;
    }
    Reason: So that this article will render correctly; the default <pre> CSS style in the newyorker3 theme sucks.
  3. Deactivated AdRotate plugin.
    Reason: Plugin not being used presently.

2013-April-04

  1. Applied for and received Akismet API Key through Nolan Machan’s account
  2. Enabled Akismet Spam Filter
    Reason: To reduce human intervention in spam moderation.
    Item to Followup: If comment spam is reduced to a level that won’t annoy the authors, maybe option “Settings > Discussion Settings > Email me whenever > Anyone posts a comment” could be re-enabled to notify authors of bona fide comments.

2013-April-02

  1. Google AdSense account disabled by Google (Bastards!)
    Reason: Illegal click activity; no further details
  2. Removed all Google AdSense blocks from WordPress pages at oakvillenews.org
    Reason: To remove “Page not Found” errors being served in ad blocks

2013-April-01

  1. Removed the following Google AdSense ad from the Right and Left Header areas:
    <block_pre><script type=”text/javascript”><!–

    /* Header Ad Right */
    google_ad_slot = “5344510862”;
    google_ad_width = 180;
    google_ad_height = 150;
    //–>
    </script>
    <script type=”text/javascript”
    src=”http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js”>
    </script>
  2. Added following code top Left Header
    <block_pre><a href=”http://www.facebook.com/CircusChocolates” target=”blank”><img src=”http://oakville-news.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Circus-Logo.jpg” scale=”0″ height=”89px” width=”158px” alt=”Circus Chocolates & Ice Cream”></a>
  3. Added following code top Right Header
    <block_pre><a href=”http://www.kerrstreetcafe.com/Kerr_Street_Cafe/Home.html” target=”blank”><img alt=”Kerr Street Cafe – cafe market espresso catering” src=”http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/kerrstreetlogo_260x150.inverted.jpg” width=”154px” height=”89px” /></a>
  4. Item to Followup: Couldn’t get AdRotate code working by just wrapping the image in
    <block_pre><a href=”http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/plugins/adrotate/adrotate-out.php?track=MywyLDAsaHR0cDovL3d3dy5mYWNlYm9vay5jb20vQ2lyY3VzQ2hvY29sYXRlcw=” target=”blank”></a>
    or
    <block_pre><a href=”http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/plugins/adrotate/adrotate-out.php?track=NCwyLDAsaHR0cDovL3d3dy5rZXJyc3RyZWV0Y2FmZS5jb20vS2Vycl9TdHJlZXRfQ2FmZS9Ib21lLmh0bWw” target=”blank”></a>
  5. In <inline_pre>http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/themes/newyorker3/style.css, reversed changes made on 2013-03-29, specifically:
    <block_pre>#mainbar {

    height: 150px;
    padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;

    }
    to
    <block_pre>#mainbar {

    height: 89px;
    padding: 10px 0px 10px 0px;

    }
    Reason: Return to original adblock height because Google Ads removed from header.

    }
    to
    <block_pre>.mainbar-middle {

2013-March-29

    }
    to
    <block_pre>#mainbar {

    height: 150px;

    }
    Reason: To accommodate GoogleAd widget which requires a 150px height.
  2. In <inline_pre>http://oakvillenews.org/wp-content/themes/newyorker3/style.css, changed
    <block_pre>.mainbar-middle {

    Reason: Subscribe OakvilleNews to Alexa rankings

2013-March-26

  1. In WordPress Dashboard:
    • Disable option “Settings > Discussion Settings > Email me whenever > Anyone posts a comment”
      Reason: Authors are tired of dealing with the spam comments. This will prevent an email being sent to the author every time a comment is posted
      Item to Followup: Once admins review moderated comments daily and spam is reduced, maybe this option could be re-enabled to notify authors of bona fide comments.
    • Disable option “Settings > Discussion Settings > E-mail me whenever > A comment is held for moderation”
      Reason: Authors are tired of dealing with the spam comments. This will prevent an email being sent to the author every time a comment is held for moderation
    • Enable option “Settings > Discussion Settings > Before a comment appears > Comment author must have a previously approved comment”
  2. Start marking spam as “Spam”, rather than delete it, to track how much spam is coming in
