To assist with the financial burden of the ice storm on those with limited incomes, the Province of Ontario has given Halton Region a limited number of grocery vouchers. Although many people lost food and incurred costs from the storm, the vouchers will only be available to Halton residents who lost power for 48 hours or more and are facing financial hardship.

Beginning Wednesday, January 8, the vouchers will be available at selected food banks throughout Halton Region until supplies are exhausted. Each food bank location will use their established screening criteria to assess financial need. Individuals must also bring proof of address.

Oakville’s Fareshare Food Bank is located at 1240 Speers Road between 4th and 3rd Lines on the south side of the road. Their telephone number is 905-847-3988.

“For people already facing financial hardship to lose their food because they had no power would be devastating so we’re glad we can work with the Province and our community partners to offer some relief,” said Sheldon Wolfson, Commissioner, Social and Community Services. “Halton Region also offers other regular support to those in need such as discounted transit passes, employment help, child care subsidies, dental assistance and housing assistance.”

For more information about the grocery vouchers including the list of food banks, along with the other enhanced Regional services due to the ice storm, visit www.halton.ca/stormupdate or dial 311.
