Cancer patients in Halton Region who are referred for radiation consultation now have the option of meeting with a radiation oncologist at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH).
The clinic will operate weekly, every Wednesday afternoon, out of the Ambulatory Care department at OTMH. Services will include pre and post radiation consultation to new and existing patients. The consultations will be provided by Dr. Jonathan Tsao, the radiation oncologist Lead from the Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program. The clinic is expected to accommodate approximately 25 consultations per month.
“The establishment of this new clinic aligns with, and supports, the MHCW Regional Cancer Program’s strategic direction in providing access to care, closer to home” said Dr. Craig McFadyen, Regional Vice President, Mississauga Halton Central West Regional Cancer Program.
Establishing a radiation consultation clinic at the current OTMH location represents the first step towards the development of the Cancer Clinic, scheduled to open at the new OTMH in early 2016. When open, the Cancer Clinic will provide patient assessment, teaching, counselling, information resources, chemotherapy administration, blood transfusions and other procedures for oncology patients.
“There is a great need for this service in our region today so we worked very hard to make it available now at the current OTMH location,” said Denise Hardenne, President and CEO of Halton Healthcare. “Having it in place before the new hospital opens in December allows for an easier transition to using the service at a new location.”
Patients undergoing consultations at the new clinic will continue to receive radiation treatment at the Regional Cancer Centre.
