On Friday, July 21, 2017, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, Carla Qualtrough announced that the Royal Canadian Golf Association has been awarded $75,000 through Sport Canada’s Hosting Program for the RBC Canadian Open Golf Championship. Operating as Golf Canada, the Royal Canadian Golf Association is the national governing body for the sport of golf, representing close to 310,000 golfers at more than 1,400 member clubs across the country.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to support the hosting of the RBC Canadian Open Golf Championship for the fifth year, as it gives our athletes the opportunity to compete against the world’s best at home, in front of enthusiastic Canadian fans,” stated Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities.

Organized by the Royal Canadian Golf Association the first Canadian Open took place in 1904 and has gone on to become one of Canada’s most prestigious golf championships. Also, it is Canada’s only PGA Tour event. The RBC Canadian Open Golf Championship is held every year and attracts up to 20 Canadian athletes and 133 international athletes from 19 countries. It is the third oldest continuously running tournament on the PGA Tour. This year, the RBC Canadian Open Golf Championship will take place for the 28th time at the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, from July 24th to 30th.

“I am proud that Oakville is the home of the Glen Abbey Golf Course, one of Canada’s most prestigious golf courses, which has had the honour of hosting the most Canadian Opens, 28 times to date,” stated Oakville MP John Oliver. “We’ve had Oakvillians, Canadians, and people from across the world come and join us in this special sporting event, and I look forward to joining those throughout our community to watch some of the greatest golfers alive.”

“On behalf of Golf Canada and everyone involved with RBC Canadian Open, we are honoured and thankful to have the support of Sport Canada behind Canada’s National Open Golf Championship,” said Golf Canada Chief Executive Officer Laurence Applebaum. “For more than a century, the RBC Canadian Open has been a rallying point for Canadian golf, giving our top athletes the opportunity to compete against the world’s best golfers while leaving a significant charitable legacy in our host communities.”
