Treating our Seniors with Dignity and Respect

I enjoy walking with my young family and dog around the Bronte area. That’s one of the reasons we live here. My youngest is still in a stroller and I’ve always understood that at times on the sidewalks, I have to physically lift the stroller up and over sections due to the state of them (notably south side of Lakeshore right before the Bronte Creek bridge).

A few weeks ago I watched one of our seniors pushing her mobility device on the road because she could not get back up on the sidewalk. I offered assistance and left thinking that she had lost her ability to be independent in our community.

This is one of the many examples of how we are letting our seniors down.

Did you know that the cost of a senior’s fitness membership in 2014 increased 23%? That seniors need to pay for memberships to recreation centres and then pay for the programming that they offer? For many families who want loved ones who have passed away to remain in Oakville, cemetery fees increased last year alone more than double the rate of inflation?

When knocking on doors I met so many great seniors that feel isolated and removed from what our community used to be. We need to do better, we need to ensure everyone can access our Village and recreation centres and that no one loses their independence do to their physical abilities.
