The Oakville Fire department is reminding residents of a fire hazard safety recall for Maytag®, Amana®, Jenn-Air®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand dishwashers due to electrical failures in the heating element. A recent investigation of a home fire revealed the cause to be an electrical failure within a previously recalled dishwasher. The occupant was seriously injured as a result of the incident.

Recalled in June 2010, the dishwashers are fitted with plastic tubs with black, bisque, white, silver or stainless steel front panels. Homeowners should check their dishwasher model and serial numbers which can be found on a label located inside the left side of the door opening. Serial numbers of the recalled units start or end with one of the following sequence:

NW39, NW40, NW41, NW42, NW43, NW44, NW45,NW46, NW47, NW48, NW49, NW50, NW51, NW52,NY01, NY02, NY03, NY04, NY05, NY06, NY07,NY08, NY09, NY10, NY11, NY12, NY13, NY14,NY15, NY16, NY17, NY18, NY19 JC, JE, JG, JJ, JL, JN, JP, JR, JT, JV, JX, LA, LC, LE, LG, LJ, LL, LN, LP, LR, LT, LV, LX, NA, NC, NE, NG, NJ, NL, NN, NP, NR

To reduce the risk of fire injuries, homeowners are reminded to install smoke alarms on every storey and outside of all sleeping areas in the home. Residents are also encouraged to discuss fire safety with their family and to develop a home fire escape plan.
