Halton Healthcare is hosting a free breast screening event at all three of its hospitals.
Women between the ages of 50 and 74 whom have not had a mammogram in the last two
years are encouraged to register for a free breast screening at the Georgetown Hospital, the
Milton District Hospital or the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. No doctor’s referral is
required to book an appointment.
“In Ontario, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, affecting one in nine women
in their lifetime and the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age,” explains Dr. Jillian
Feberwee, Lead Radiologist for Women’s Imaging at Halton Healthcare. “Due to
misinformation, fear of bad news or concerns about mammograms, many women are not being
screened regularly for breast cancer. Many women avoid or delay their regular mammogram –
the very test that could help save their life.”
The Mammothon is a one-day breast screening campaign organized by the Mississauga Halton
Central West Regional Cancer Program. The campaign was created in 2014 to address
common barriers that women experience toward regular cancer screening including fear,
embarrassment and a lack of time and/or awareness.
