For too long, women have stood alone in speaking out against gender inequality and the many forms of violence against women. The fact this violence has continued was not only because of the actions of that minority of men who chose to use violence in their relationships, but because the majority of men chose to remain silent.

Now, thankfully, in Canada and around the world, more and more men and boys are speaking out against this violence and in support of equality. More men and boys are supporting campaigns (such as The White Ribbon Campaign) and other efforts in their schools, workplaces, places of worship and communities.

These men are not only speaking out against violence, but they are playing a positive role in redefining our ideas of manhood. They are saying that the strength of a man isn’t defined through violence and aggression. They are saying that men’s nurturing role as fathers is an important part of men’s lives. They are saying that our families and workplaces are strengthened through true partnerships between women and men.

We are committed to hosting this important event with the aim of supporting and furthering the emergence of men’s voices. Entitled, “Men Who Make a Difference,” this will be part of our vision to raise awareness and shift social norms that define manhood in our culture. We see it as a way to encourage men’s involvement and to honour those men who make a difference.

A seasoned television and radio broadcaster, as well as a dedicated community builder, Ken Welch has spearheaded fundraising initiatives for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the annual Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion events and many charity golf tournaments. He has contributed his talent to the McMaster Marauders Football Galas, the Hamilton Tigercats Wall of Honour and Walk of Fame. Since 1985 he has been Sports Anchor for CHCH TV Hamilton and we are delighted to present him as the Master of Ceremonies for tonight’s gala.
