Former Mayor Harry Barrett helped shape Oakville into the wonderful community it is today.

He served on Oakville Town Council as a councillor from 1968-1970, deputy reeve from 1971-1972 and six terms as Oakville’s mayor from 1973-1985.

Mr. Barrett was a dedicated member of our community long after he served on Council. His passion for our town was evident to everyone who knew him. He passed away peacefully this morning in his 93rd year.

We owe a great debt to Mr. Barrett for his leadership in preserving our waterfront and harbours.

He was a strong advocate for the protection and preservation of our heritage. Also, Mr. Barrett established the town’s public waterfront policy and for his contributions, the town’s network of waterfront parks, open spaces and trails was named the Harry Barrett Waterfront Parks System in 2013.

His family has said, “The greatest gift you could give Harry would be to continue to care about Oakville, its culture, its spirit and its heart.”

Flags at all town facilities are being flown at half-mast in memory of Mr. Barrett.

He will truly be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.

A service is being held at St. John’s United Church, 262 Randall St., on Monday, December 3 at 1 p.m.
