Hunter Mahan grabs second round lead at 2013 RBC Canadian Open

Hunter Mahan fired a second round 8-under 64 to grab the lead through 36 holes at the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club.

Mahan heads into the weekend with a two-stroke lead over John Merrick who matched the course record at Glen Abbey with a 10-under 62 on Friday morning.

“I’m just going out there and really try to trust my game and just allow things to happen and not get in the way of myself and be as present as I can,” Mahan said following his bogey-free round.

Merrick set the tone early in ideal conditions at Glen Abbey, posting the clubhouse lead at 10-under after consecutive 5-under 31’s. His bogey-free 62 is his career low on the PGA TOUR and puts him in a great position to pick up his second win of the season.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” Merrick said following his round. “I’m just going to enjoy this day and do the best I can tomorrow, but if it happens, it would be great.”

Four Canadians made the cut, including Mike Weir of Bright’s Grove, Ont., who at one point during the day sat as high as a tie for third on the leaderboard. Weir posted a second round 5-under 67 and will play Glen Abbey this weekend alongside Roger Sloan of Merritt, B.C., Brad Fritsch of Ottawa, Ont., and David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., who birdied his last three holes to make the cut on the number.

Note: Since more than 78 players on Friday made the cut, an additional cut will be made following play on Saturday.
