Starting tomorrow, Monday, June 17, 2024, Oakville Fire crews will be visiting homes across the town to discuss fire safety tips and advice as crews begin their door-to-door campaign.

In 2023, Ontario saw 121 fire-related deaths. In Oakville, there were two fire-related fatalities. This door-to-door campaign, running until September 30, 2024, aims to educate the community on fire prevention and carbon monoxide safety.

Firefighters will visit 12,000 homes during the campaign, conducting visits from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Firefighters will be in uniform, and residents are not obligated to provide them access to their homes as this is an awareness program.

Fire education information and resources are available in English, French, Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish on the Fire Prevention and Safety page on the town of Oakville's website. For information in another language, residents can call 905-845-6601 and request over-the-phone interpretation, which is available in more than 240 languages.

Ontario’s Fire Code requires that homes have a working smoke alarm on each floor and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required outside sleeping areas if the home has an attached garage, fireplace, wood stove or fuel-burning appliance.

Fire safety is a shared responsibility, and the Oakville Fire Department urges everyone in Oakville to prepare, practice a home fire escape plan and test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. More details are available on the town of Oakville's Fire Prevention and Safety page.
