Big changes: how the new three-year Dundas Street construction affects drivers

Halton Region has begun phase one of what will be a three-year set of road improvements to Dundas Street (or Regional Road 5) in north Oakville.

Dundas Street (Reg. Rd. 5) is a critical major east-west corridor with more than 40,000 daily road users. Beginning this month, September 2024, Halton Region says they "will begin construction activities for Dundas Street Improvements, Phase 1."

Halton Region released a statement regarding the now underway construction:

"To keep traffic moving and to accommodate growth in north Burlington and Oakville, Halton Region is making improvements to Dundas Street from Kerns Road to Bronte Road (Reg. Rd. 25)."

The Dundas Street Improvements project will be completed in three phases:

  • Phase 1
    • Contract 1 – Appleby Line (Reg. Rd. 20) to Tremaine Road (Reg. Rd. 22), (Project PR-2672B)
    • Contract 2 – Tremaine Road to Bronte Road, (Project PR-2671B)
  • Phase 2 – Appleby Line to Guelph Line (Reg. Rd. 1), (Project PR-2550A/3200A)
  • Phase 3 – Guelph Line to east of Kerns Road (Project PR-3207B)

The project is scheduled to be completed in September 2027.

Beginning in September 2024, Halton Region will begin construction activities for Dundas Street Improvements, Phase 1, Contract 2, Tremaine Road to Bronte Road, Wards 5 and 6, in the City of Burlington and Wards 1, 4 and 7 in the Town of Oakville (see above map).

As part of the preliminary work required for the project, utilities such as hydro and telecommunications are being relocated.

The contractor for Phase 1, Contract 2 is GIP Construction and Materials Limited with project administration by Stantec Consulting Ltd. Phase 1, Contract 2 is expected to be completed in 2027 and at that time, residents, businesses, and motorists in the area can expect to see the following improvements:

  • Widening from four to six lanes
  • Road resurfacing
  • New multi-use paths, sidewalks and on-road bike lanes
  • New bus stops and shelters
  • New traffic signals and streetlights
  • A new bridge over Fourteen Mile Creek
  • New sanitary sewers
  • New watermains
  • Upgraded storm water infrastructure
  • Environmental protection measures

PLANNING AHEAD

We understand that Dundas Street is a key transportation corridor in Halton Region. The Region will be implementing construction impact mitigation plans to minimize disruptions to residents, businesses and motorists in the area. To help you plan ahead for construction activity, please read the project related information below.

  • Driveway access: Direct access to your driveway may be restricted for short periods of time. We will provide advance notice of any planned restrictions.
  • Dust and mud: There may be increased levels of dust and mud near the work site. The contractor is required to manage these impacts.
  • Erosion and sediment controls: We will install erosion and sediment control measures for the duration of the project, including a heavy-duty silt fence around the perimeter of the project site.
  • Lawn irrigation system: If you have a lawn irrigation system within the public road allowance, please locate, disconnect and remove any sprinkler heads prior to the construction work commencing. Halton Region will not be responsible for damaging irrigation systems that are located within the public road allowance.
  • Mail delivery: We do not anticipate any changes or delays to mail delivery. We will provide advance notice if there are any changes.
  • Night work: Night work may be required as part of this project. We will provide advance notice of any change in work hours.
  • Noise: You may experience noise as a result of Regional improvements. Work will be scheduled in accordance with local noise by-laws.
  • Traffic delays: This work may cause traffic delays; lane shifts or lane restrictions. We will make every effort to minimize any potential inconvenience. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
  • Truck traffic: You will notice occasional increases in truck traffic around the ongoing improvements. Please be aware and use extra caution while driving.
  • Vibration: You may experience some vibration due to the work being done. As a precaution, we recommend that you remove or secure objects on shelves and walls.
