B’nai Brith calls for Reviving Roots Conference to be cancelled

The Jewish human rights organization denounced Mohammed Hijab’s views on LGBTQ individuals, religious extremism and child sexual abuse

Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward also released a public statement on Tuesday, Jan. 29 to call for the conference to be cancelled.

B’nai Brith Canada, one of the country's oldest independent Jewish human rights group, has released a statement calling for the Burlington Convention Centre (BCC) to cancel the Reviving Roots Conference that is to take place on Monday, Feb. 24.

The organization formally called for the cancellation of the event due to the controversial speaker Mohammed Hijab, who has a history of antisemitism, homophobia and misogyny and has gone on record spreading violent rhetoric about Jewish and Christian groups.

Mayor Marianne Meed Ward and Ward 2 Councillor Lisa Kearns have also released statements calling for the BCC to cancel the event over Hijab’s appearance.

As of this publication, Mohammed Hijab is still scheduled to speak at the event.
