Elected officials in Halton Region have released a joint statement in response to tariffs being threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump:
For the People of Halton, Ontario, we, the undersigned Members of Federal and Provincial Parliaments, Halton Region Chair and Mayors, and Members of the Councils of Halton Region and its local municipalities, representing the people of Halton, write to you today with a unified voice, standing in firm opposition to the unjust tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
These tariffs target Canadian industries, disrupt our economy, and threaten the livelihoods of hardworking families across our province.
Canada has always been a strong and fair trading partner, and we will not sit idly by while unfair trade policies put our businesses and workers at risk. We believe in a strong, self-reliant economy—one that values and prioritizes Canadian businesses and their success in the world.
We will be reviewing all municipal, provincial and federal contracts to ensure that our purchasing supports Canadian companies and those who deal fairly with Canada first.
We call on Halton businesses and residents to stand with us, Halton and Canada proud. We shall continue to invest in our communities, support our workers, and strengthen our industries.
By choosing products and services that are from Halton, Canada, and countries that respect their trade alliances and treaties with Canada, we reinforce our resilience and independence while protecting local jobs and strengthening mutually advantageous trade.
This is not just about economic policy; it is about our future. The people of Halton have always been known for their strength, innovation, and unity. Let us harness that spirit and ensure that our communities thrive despite the unfair trade barriers imposed by the President of the United States.
We urge residents to join us in this stand. Support local. Buy Canadian. Support fair trading partners. Avoid sources that do not honour their trade agreements. Let’s build an economy that is strong, independent, and fair for all.
