Firefighters rescue three from collapsed Oakville basement construction site

Upon arrival, Oakville Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault says firefighters discovered that three people were trapped in a partially collapsed, approximately 10-foot-deep trench.

Oakville Fire rescued three people trapped in a basement last night, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, after receiving a call for medical assistance at a home on Mohawk Road.

Last night, at approximately 7:59 p.m., the Oakville Fire Department (OFD) received a call for medical assistance at a residence where a basement access for a secondary suite was under construction.

Upon arrival, Oakville Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault says firefighters discovered that three people were trapped in a partially collapsed, approximately 10-foot-deep trench.

"2 individuals were able to self-extricate using OFD equipment, however a third remained trapped," said Chief Boissonneault. "The trapped individual had suffered a broken leg and was also safely extricated by fire and transported by Halton EMS."

Oakville Fire, assisted by the Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services' technical trench certified team, safely extricated the individual. Halton Police and Halton EMS were on scene and medics transported the injured person, who was the only one taken to hospital.

Chief Boissonneault says the Ministry of Labour has been informed.

Sources at the scene say two of the people were rescued within 30 minutes, but a third male, who was trapped up to near his chest in the trench took almost two hours.
