Food for Life, a leading organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity, echoes the urgent call to action highlighted in the newly released Feed Ontario Hunger Report. The report’s findings paint a stark picture of growing food insecurity across Ontario, including in our own communities of Halton and Hamilton.

The report reveals an alarming rise in visits being made to food security programs, including food banks and meal programs and increasing pressure on these programs, a trend mirrored locally. Over the past year, Food fod Life has witnessed a surge in demand for its services as families and individuals struggle with the escalating cost of living, including housing, utilities, and groceries. Financial pressures on households have reached unprecedented levels, forcing many to make difficult choices between basic necessities.

Thoughout 2024, Food for Life has witnessed a more than 20 per cent increase in access across the over 100 vital programs they provide food for throughout Halton and Hamilton. These programs, including traditional food banks and meal programs, as well pop-up markets for seniors, fresh food locker programs, fresh fridge programs and home delivery programs, provide nutritious food to over 4,000 neighbors in need each week, ensuring that no one is left behind in these challenging times.

“Our mission has always been to rescue surplus food and deliver it to those who need it most,” says Karen Randell, executive director of Food for Life. “This year, the need is more urgent than ever. The rising cost of living is leaving families with fewer resources to cover essential expenses, and the demand for food support continues to grow.”

Through collaboration with local food industry partners, grocers, and farmers, Food for Life rescues over 4.6 million of pounds of food each year, reducing waste and turning surplus into sustenance. However, meeting the growing need requires continued community support.

“As we approach the holiday season, we encourage everyone to reflect on the challenges facing their neighbors and consider how they can contribute,” adds Karen Randell. “Together, we can ensure that our community is nourished and supported through these difficult times.”

Food for Life invites local residents and businesses to join the effort by donating, volunteering, or raising awareness about food insecurity in Halton and Hamilton.
