GALLERY: Northern lights on full display over Oakville

Last night's display was classified as a G4 on the solar intensity scale, which ranges from G1 to G5, and the lights are expected to remain visible tonight.

The aurora borealis (northern lights) were clearly visible from Oakville last night, with residents capturing photos of the stunning display.

On Oct. 10, 2024, Oakville was lit up by a magnetic storm that experts say covered most of northern North America and is expected to make a return later tonight, Oct. 11, 2024.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center reported that the large magnetic storm was visible across much of northern North America. NOAA explains that the visibility of the auroras is due to solar activity affecting Earth's magnetic field.

"Beautiful," said Raj Vemulapalli, who captured much of last nights display in Oakville. "Especially when it is visible to naked eyes without any camera. It was definitely a low altitude one, and it kept coming."
