The decision to provide remuneration for regional council members sitting on the Halton Police Board has been further deferred.

A review will be conducted before the next term of council, with the new policy expected to take effect for councillors serving the term starting Jan. 1, 2027.

Halton Hills regional councillor Clark Somerville, who moved the original and amended motion, said he looks at the compensation as “an issue of fairness for our colleagues around the table.”

“So I am hoping that we can have a wholesome discussion on it and look at the work that is done and we can move forward,” Somerville said at the latest Halton regional council meeting.

The motion proposes a remuneration package aligned with compensation given to Conservation Halton board members. This includes a per diem of $150 per day for attendance at regular, special and sub-committee meetings.

It also proposes an annual payment of $10,000 to any council member serving as chair of the police board, and $3,000 for vice-chair.

Cathy Duddeck, regional councillor from Oakville, expressed her appreciation for the effort put forth by the motion’s mover and seconder.

“I totally concur that I think it best to wait till the next term of council for us to make a clean break in terms of giving us an opportunity to provide parameters,” Duddeck said. “I would fully support us looking at implementing something in the next term of council.”
