Have your say on a new tax that could cost local businesses thousands

The town is expecting to spend $732 million to maintain and improve its current stormwater infrastructure over the next 30 years but homeowners and businesses will feel it in their pockets if the town introduces a new stormwater tax.

Residents can provide feedback on the town’s Stormwater Fee Feasibility Study through upcoming public engagement opportunities.

The town is expecting to spend $732 million to maintain and improve its current stormwater infrastructure over the next 30 years but homeowners and businesses will feel it in their pockets if the town introduces a new stormwater tax.

The town is reviewing various funding methods, including the current tax system and a separate, dedicated stormwater fee with the aim to make the structure fair and equitable for taxpayers.

Residents, businesses and community groups are encouraged to join the upcoming public engagement opportunities to provide feedback on the town’s Stormwater Fee Feasibility Study.

The study looks at fair and reliable funding options to pay for the town’s long-term stormwater management needs.

Public engagement opportunities include:

  • Residential Property Survey and Non-Residential Property Survey are available until Oct. 18, 2024.
  • A virtual community information session on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visit the Stormwater Fee Feasibility Study page to register for the Zoom meeting.
  • A Public Information Centre (PIC) at Glen Abbey Community Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The PIC will begin with a presentation on the study, followed by a question-and-answer period.
  • A virtual public meeting for commercial, retail and industrial property owners on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Visit the Stormwater Fee Feasibility Study page to register for the Zoom meeting.
