PHOTOS: Oakville firefighters train for rescues on ice-covered Bronte Harbour

Over the weekend, Oakville Fire has been conducted special training on the frozen Lake Ontario for winter rescues

Over the past number of days, Oakville firefighters have been working on their ice rescue skills at the nearly ice covered Bronte Outer Harbour.

A number of crews put on specialized ice rescue suits so that they could practice self-extrication skills that include broken ice and cold lake water scenarios, along with using rescue slings and rescue sleds.

Both Fire and Police officials want to remind all residents that ‘No Ice is Safe’ even with temperatures being as cold as they have been. Hypothermia can take over someone in a matter of minutes.

Just this year, a man in his 70s passed after falling through ice close to Centre Island and back in 2020 a young boy died after he and his friend fell through ice at a Milton pond after they stepped onto the ice hoping to get back their soccer ball.
