Oakville MP and Canadian Transport Minister Anita Anand will not be seeking re-election in her current position as the MP for Oakville, nor will she be entering the race to become the next leader of the Liberal party of Canada.

Anand announced this news in a statement posted on X in the afternoon of Saturday Jan, 11.

This announcement comes nearly a week after Justin Trudeau announced that he would be resigning from his position as Canadian Prime-Minister and Liberal leader.

Anand first ran for Oakville MP in 2019 and won becoming the first woman of Indian descent to become an MP in the town, since her victory, she has worked side by side with the federal government and helped lead Canada through the treacherous waters that arose during the pandemic.

Anand ran for re-election in 2021, once again winning the riding and continuing to give Oakville a loud voice in the House of Commons.

In her statement, Anand mentioned how important the town of Oakville and its people have been to her.

"I am truly grateful to the people of Oakville for selecting me to represent them in Canada's House of Commons," said Anand.

"During my first campaign, many people told me that a woman of Indian descent would not get elected in Oakville, Ontario. Yet Oakville rallied behind me not once but twice since 2019, an honour that I will hold in my heart forever."

Anand will be leaving the Liberal party to return to her roots of teaching, research and public policy analysis.
