Oakville Public Library to relocate Central Branch

The Oakville Public Library (OPL) is set to relocate its central branch from its iconic Lakeshore Road location to a new spot just around the corner.

The Oakville Public Library (OPL) is set to relocate its central branch from its iconic Lakeshore Road location to a new spot just around the corner on Church Street, set to happen by 2028. The current central branch has been in Oakville for 57 years (since 1967).

"Oakville Public Library's (OPL) new Central Branch is a visionary project set to redefine the Oakville community's cultural and learning landscape," said OPL staff in a news release.

This relocation is a component of the town's "Downtown Cultural Hub" (DCH) project, which includes several significant changes to the downtown core, with the library's move being a top priority.

According to the town's website, "The Downtown Cultural Hub (DCH) is an initiative that explores opportunities to update and improve downtown cultural and performing arts spaces that contributes to the vibrancy of our cultural spaces and local economy."

The new branch will be located at 193 Church Street.

The development is being led by the Toronto-based architecture firm Perkins&Will.

While plans for the current central branch location at 120 Navy Street have not yet been outlined, the DCH project does say there will be updates to the neighbouring Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts.

More to come on this developing story.
