Food for Life has received a $35,000 donation from the Rotary Clubs of Oakville (RCO) and Oakville West (RCOW), raised through the recent Rotary Golf to Give tournament.
They say this contribution will provide over $222,000 worth of fresh food to support more than 4,000 households facing food insecurity in Oakville and Halton Region.
RCO and RCOW were pleased to present Meaghan Richardson, Food for Life Director, Resource Development with a $35,000 cheque at the dinner meeting held at the Oakville Golf Club on Oct. 21, 2024.
The funds were raised primarily through the two clubs’ Rotary Golf to Give tournament, held recently at Piper’s Heath Golf Club.
"With Food for Life making every $10 donation turn into $63.70 worth of good food, Rotarians are excited that this donation will magnify through Food for Life’s resourcefulness to help those in need in Oakville/Halton," said Golf Committee Chair Bob Miskelly.
Since its inception in 1995, Food for Life has rescued over 26 million pounds of food by collecting surplus perishable food (fruit and vegetables, dairy, meat and prepared foods) from both retail and wholesale food suppliers and grocery stores.
They are the largest food rescue organization in Halton and Hamilton. As a volunteer-powered, grassroots-driven organization led by a small staff, Food for Life employs just 22 full-time staff yet utilizes approximately 400 volunteers from the community to mobilize their mission to feed the hungry.
"Food for life is incredibly grateful for this tremendous support," said Richardson.
"This funding comes at a time where we see food insecurity rates rising significantly, across Oakville and Halton Region. With every $10 donated, we are able to provide $63.70 worth of food and groceries - meaning that this donation will bring over $222,000 worth of healthy fresh food to the over 4000 households we support each week," she continued.
"This donation will truly rescue food and impact lives!"
