Beginning next year, planned upgrades to Shipyard Park will improve lakefront access and create a new gathering area.
The 2-hectare park located alongside the Sixteen Mile Creek, south of Lakeshore Road, is getting a $5.6 million face lift.
A new seating and gathering area will be created, including a commemorative feature highlighting Oakville’s role as a major port of entry for the Underground Railroad. Renderings of the proposed feature show a shaded, circular seating area that includes interpretive panels and a picnic area.
Other elements of the project include:
- Redesign of the Francis Street access road and intersection to improve accessibility and add a pedestrian sidewalk
- Regrading and repaving existing parking areas
- Adding a new cap on the south seawall, to raise its elevation and decrease flooding potential
- Boardwalk replacement and creation of continuous public access to the existing waterfront trail
- Improved lighting and landscaping
Along with providing public waterfront access, the park is well-used by the Oakville Yacht Squadron (OYS) for its sailing school and boat servicing.
Detailed design work on the project is underway, with the town aiming for construction to take place through two phases, beginning in the fall of 2025 and continuing in 2026.
It is warning that construction work may restrict access to parking and the boat launch.
A slideshow with further details on the project is available, and feedback can be submitted to town staff at [email protected] by Dec. 20.
