Oakville's own Madeline Schizas has captured her third Women's National Figure Skating Championship.
Schizas redeems herself after faltering in last year's Championships, where she dropped from 1st place to 2nd and captured the silver medal.
Prior to her performance, Schizas was very anxious about hitting the ice: "I was quite nervous. I was just like, 'Man, I want this to be over.'"
"Every Canadian senior nationals I've skated at, I've skated last in the free skate — every year it rolls around, and it never gets easier."
Luckily, Oakville's 21-year-old skating sensation was able to gather her nerves and perform an incredible set this past Sunday, Jan. 19 to take back her title.
Schizas debuted a new routine where she landed seven triples and never fell once. She scored 133.87 points in the free skate, which brought her total score to 203.87 - which is now a Canadian record.
"I feel so good," Schizas said. "I'm happy that not only was I able to win, but I was able to put out skates I was proud of."
