NEWS RELEASE
OAKVILLE TERRY FOX RUN
**************************
“...if I don't make it, then the Marathon of Hope better continue. It has to go on without me. Nobody is ever going to call me a quitter.” - Terry Fox 1980

As Oakville gears up for the 44th annual Terry Fox Run on Sept. 15, all residents are invited to celebrate Terry Fox’s wish and continue his Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. The tagline for this year’s Run is No Matter What, celebrating Terry’s unwavering determination to raise awareness and find better treatments and cures for all forms of cancer.

The Oakville Terry Fox Run will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Coronation Park (Third Line and Lakeshore Road West). Registration begins at 9 a.m with the Run start at 10 a.m. While it is officially referred to as a “run” because Terry ran it himself, the annual event is open to walkers, bikers, strollers, boarders and fans who come down to cheer on participants, donate to support world-leading cancer research and enjoy the community

Terry Fox Run t-shirts will be available on site, $25 for adult sizes and $20 for youth sizes, with all proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation. T-shirt sales and donations to the Oakville Terry Fox Run can be made by cash or credit card on Run day. There will also be Tip Tap machines on site that allow people to simply tap a card to make a quick donation (no tax receipt). Past participants will remember the special ‘In Memory Of’ and ‘In Honour Of’ road signs which honour a friend or family member who has experienced cancer. The signs will once again be on sale for $5 each and they are posted along the route in Coronation Park each year.

Oakville’s Terry Fox Run is plastic water bottle free. Participants are invited to bring their own water bottles and refill them on site. Compostable cups will also be available.

There is still time to ‘Team Up for Terry Fox.’ Teams can be as few as two people or as many as 200 or more as a way to come together to make a difference in the fight against cancer and to bond as families, friends and neighbours. Online registration is encouraged here: https://run.terryfox.ca/55953

Registration for teams and individuals will also be available on site the morning of the Run. Teams are invited to set up tents, bring friends and enjoy a fun day at the park post-run.

When Terry began his Run in 1980, he said, “If we all give one dollar, we’d have $22 million for cancer research - there’s no reason that isn’t possible!” We agree. At this year’s Run, organizers are asking Oakville residents to help us raise $1 for every Oakville resident, over $200,000.

On Sunday, September 15, walk, bike, board, blade, run, push a stroller, or walk the dog along a beautiful lake-side 2k, 5k or 10k route. Participants are encouraged to car pool and are reminded that there is no parking in Coronation Park itself, and asked to observe all “No Parking” signs on side streets nearby (no parking on the grass).

Between the annual community Run and school runs, Oakville residents have raised over six million dollars in support of new treatments and cures for all forms of cancer since 1982.
