Oakville candidates who wish to run for office in the 2018 municipal and school board elections can begin registering on May 1, 2018.
Nominations will be accepted for:
- Office of the Mayor
- Town Councillors
- Town and Regional Councillors
- Regional Chair
- School board trustees
Candidates may complete and file nomination forms at the Clerk’s department at Town Hall from May 1 to July 26 during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 27.
Forms are available online at elections.oakville.ca.
Candidates must be:
- A Canadian citizen
- 18 years of age or older
- Legally permitted to vote and hold municipal office
- Live, own or rent property in the Town of Oakville or be the spouse of an owner or renter
The term of elected office will be from December 1, 2018 to November 14, 2022.

New ward boundary model:
The future seven-ward boundary system for Oakville (approved by Council in November 2016) will be used to conduct the election and will officially be in place on December 1, 2018. Changing the town’s ward system from six to seven means the composition of Town Council will increase from 13 members (12 councillors, plus Mayor) to 15 (14 councillors, plus Mayor). Third party advertising rules:
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as amended, now includes rules for third party advertising during elections. A third party advertiser is any individual, corporation or trade union that causes an election campaign advertisement to appear. A third party advertisement is a message in any medium (billboard, newspaper, radio, etc.) that supports or opposes a candidate or a “yes” or “no” vote on a question on the ballot.
A webinar from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs on third party advertising regulations will be broadcast in Council Chamber at Town Hall on Monday, April 23rd from 6 to 8 p.m. The session is open to the public.
All third party advertisers are required to register with the Town Clerk and can do so starting May 1st until October 19th. Visit elections.oakville.ca for details.
