Councillor Alan Johnston was unanimously elected this morning as the President of Halton Community Housing Corporation (HCHC). Councillor Johnston will serve as HCHC’s president for the remainder of this term of Council.

“This past year was a banner year for the Halton Community Housing Corporation in the creation of the most housing units in the province,” Councillor Johnston said. “There are challenges ahead and we’ll need the federal government’s full support, but I’m honoured to continue this important work of providing affordable housing for those who need it most.”

HCHC owns and operates 27 communities within Halton Region, providing housing to families and seniors. Halton Region invests $26 million annually to provide assisted-housing options for low-income residents. Since 2006, the Region has invested $19 million in partnership with the federal and provincial governments and has built 265 new housing units in the community.

“Councillor Johnston has the skills, determination and background to lead the HCHC through an important time regionally for affordable housing,” Mayor Rob Burton said.

HCHC schedules meetings as required, with the next meeting planned for April 8, 2014
