The Halton Police have charged a 34 year old woman for trafficking a controlled substance while inside a Milton courthouse jail cell.

On November 4, 2019, courthouse officers were alerted of a woman in custody in medical distress. Officers responded and initiated life saving measures, which include administering three doses of naloxone.  Fortunately, the woman regained vital signs and was transported by paramedics to a local hospital where she later recovered.

This incident triggered a police investigation which determined the woman received the substance, believed to be fentanyl, from her cell mate, a 34 year old woman from London.

The inmate had been arrested by the Halton Regional Police Service the day prior for charges including possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a controlled substance, and failure to comply with conditions of undertaking.

As a result of these charges, inmate was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Officers determined that inmate had concealed the suspected fentanyl on her person prior to being arrested.  After carefully reviewing all evidence, including video footage, the Halton Regional Police Service formed reasonable grounds to believe inmate trafficked the substance to the victim, which resulted in her overdose.

The 39 year-old who is still in custody, has since been charged with an additional count of trafficking a controlled substance.

Anyone with questions or information about these events is asked to contact Detective Constable Chris Gibbons of the Drug and Human Trafficking Unit at 905 825-4747 ext. 4972.

Tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers "See Something? Hear Something? Know Something? Contact Crime Stoppers" at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or through the web at www.haltoncrimestoppers.ca.

Please be reminded that all persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
