Oakvillegreen Conservation Association is excited to announce a content-packed series of new web pages that highlight the ecological significance, beauty and value of our urban creeks. The web pages focus on Fourteen Mile Creek in Oakville - a small creek with a big heart – and provide ecological information, beautiful photos, trail access points and tips about what residents can do to protect and care for this special urban creek.

Financial support for the resource pages and the Discover Your Creek project came from the Oakville Environmental Fund (a fund held within the Oakville Community Foundation). The Oakville Community Foundation is a registered charitable public foundation serving the Oakville Community (www.theocf.org).

Oakville’s urban creeks and valley lands, like Fourteen Mile Creek, run the risk of being under-appreciated for their vital environmental and social values. The purpose of the web pages was to demonstrate that even small creeks and valley lands provide important ecosystem services – they are natural corridors for migratory species, they provide habitat for many plants and animals, they slow down and filter water, they improve our air quality, and provide vital green space for our community to enjoy, with huge benefits to human well-being!

Oakvillegreen’s Discover Your Creek project aimed to get people out into and discovering our urban creeks, to inspire appreciation and stewardship. Since June 2015, the Discover Your Creek project has resulted in 650 trees planted at 5 creek-side locations in Oakville, 178 youth involved in watershed stewardship presentations and projects, a Discover Your Creek Day of family-friendly events at Lion’s Valley Park in September, 44 corporate volunteers from 3 companies participating in riparian stewardship, and a Discover Your Creek Photo Contest.
