At 4:51 AM on Sunday August 16, 2015 Environment Canada issued a Heat Warning for both Sunday and Monday. Temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees on both days with above average humidity. Today's high is forecast to hit 30 and with the humidity it will feel like 38.

Oakville has a number of splash pads and outdoor pools which are perfect on a day like today:

  1. Town of Oakville Pools
  2. Town of Oakville Splash Pads

Here is Environment Canada's Statement for Oakville:

Today and Monday are expected to be hot and humid. Daytime high temperatures are expected to be in the low thirties with maximum humidex values near forty. Overnight, temperatures are only expected to fall to about twenty or so.

While extreme heat can put everyone at risk from heat illnesses, health risks are greatest for

  1. older adults
  2. infants and young children
  3. people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses
  4. people who work in the heat
  5. people who exercise in the heat
  6. people without access to air conditioning and
  7. homeless people.

Drink plenty of liquids especially water before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

If you know of a personĀ in the above categories, take a moment to see how they are doing. Being a good neighbour just takes a moment, and could save a life.
