An extended extreme cold warning is in effect. It was issued by Environment Canada on December 30-2017 at 8:46 PM. The cold is anticipated to last for several days. Oakville News will provide updates as they are released.
The frigid temperatures are supposed to ease up slightly on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, and drop right back down on Wednesday. According to the Weather Channel, the cold weather is forecast to last until Sunday morning.
Here are a few ideas, so you don't go stir crazy:
- All the community centres, indoor pools, libraries, senior centres and arenas will be open.
- Tim Hortons has arranged with the Town free public swims several times a day from Tuesday through Friday.
- The Oakville public library branches are offering excellent programs for children.
- The YMCA will be open on New Years Day.
- Catch a movie - we have three movie theatres in town including Film.ca which is independently owned and very inexpensive.
- Don't forget about Oakville Place. On cold days, it provides a large open space with several places to grab a coffee, a bite to eat, shop, or simply go for a stroll.
Several extremely cold days in a row can be especially difficult for the elderly or those who have difficultly moving around. If you know of someone in this position, why not drop by for a chat? It can make the world of difference.
When travelling keep your gas tank full, and an emergency kit which at the very least includes: blankets, water, some snacks, and a flash light.
Finally, remember if it is too cold for you to be outside, please do not let your pets out for any length of time. It can be extremely dangerous.

A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected.
2017 is about to end with the coldest air of the year. A fresh surge of record-breaking Arctic air is forecast to encompass the entire province in its icy grip. A trough of low pressure currently over Southern Ontario will drop south of the Great Lakes tonight, opening the door to an even colder northerly wind.
Although winds will be relatively light, the extreme cold is expected to produce windchill values below minus 30 overnight into Sunday, and again Sunday night. New Year's Eve revellers are cautioned that windchill values will be near minus 30 late Sunday evening as we ring in 2018.
Latest indications continue to show that these very cold conditions will persist into New Year's Day and potentially Tuesday.
