I’ve chatted with Che Marville on several occasions, and have always been struck by her professionalism and sincerity. She is passionate about her commitment to the NDP, and ran in the last provincial election as the NDP candidate for Oakville.
Born in London England in 1970, she came with her mom and four siblings to Toronto when she was just 4 years old. Her family is originally from Guyana, and it was her Grandfather who developed a love for Canada. Her Mom was a nurse and worked at Toronto Western Hospital. The family lived in a two-bedroom apartment on the 16th floor in the richly diverse community of Thorncliffe Park in East York.
During her childhood, Che would visit with her Grandparents in Guyana. “At a young age, I became aware of how lucky I was to live in Canada.”
At the age of nine she became so ill during one of these visits that she was flown to Trinidad. Death was knocking at the door. Her mom flew down, and brought her home. An ambulance was waiting for her on the tarmac at Pearson, and she was taken straight to Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital. At that moment she knew how lucky she was to be a Canadian.
She loved learning, and education was valued at home. She attended York University’s Glendon College where she received her degree in Political Science. She put herself through school by working for the Ontario Science Centre first as a parking attendant and ending up as an exhibition developer and project manager, after she received a certificate in Project Management from York University’s Schulich School of Business. She worked at the Science Centre for 16 years.
Her career then took her into H.R. for the University Health Network’s St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was the senior advisor in H.R. and the chair of the first Wellness Centre. Now she works as a consultant developing wellness programs for Seniors.
Her Uncle who was the Mayor of Owen Sound inspired her political life. “Around the dinner table my family would often have discussions about politics, and by the age of 13 I was already attending political rallies,” stated Che.
In 2002 she moved to Oakville. Her husband was from Oakville, and she knew it would be an excellent place to raise a family.
