Janice Best sits down to talk, dressed for business. This is her first time running as a candidate for the New Democratic Party, so she is finding her political legs. However, it just takes her a moment to find her footing.

Janice was born in Lindsay, Ontario and lived in the area until the end of high school. She has one sibling, a younger brother. Her Dad was an electrician, and her Mom was a homemaker. She attended MacMaster University, and graduated from the National Labour College in Maryland. When she married she moved to Scarborough and from there to Don Mills. In 1983 she moved to Burlington.

Her career has been in Labour Relations for the Office and Professional Employee’s Union. For 14 years she was the Ontario National Vice President, and was one of the first women elected to that level within the Union. COPE has 6000 Ontario members and she and her staff of 13 supported those members.

Janice is no stranger to labour negotiations. For the 800 COPE members of the Hamilton Wentworth School Board, she fought and won solid increases in wages and standardized hours.

As a life long member of the NDP, she has worked on various elections in Toronto and Hamilton, where she helped Andrea Howrath. This will be her first involvement in her riding of Oakville North Burlington. She also she volunteer with Telcare, which helps people in crisis.

“This is the most exciting election. I believe I would be good at it (Federal Politics) and will take it on with Gusto –,“ is how Janice explained why she wanted to be the NDP Candidate for Oakville North Burlington.
