Following in the footsteps of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, over 140 MPs have initiated Constituency Youth Councils across Canada with the goal of connecting young Canadians with opportunities for civic engagement and public service. The first meeting of the newly created Oakville North-Burlington Youth Advisory Council was held on October 12, 2016, at the old Palmero School House.
Oakville North-Burlington’s Youth Advisory Council consists of high school students between grades 10-12 from across the riding. The students where nominated, but there are a few volunteers.
Students who are selected for the youth advisory council volunteer for one year. Students meet once a month for two hours and provide input and advice on key issues that are important to them such as employment, education, building a stronger community, immigration and climate change. This is an excellent opportunity for students to have a say in their community as well as meet and network with equally passionate students in Oakville and Burlington.
