Fortune Telling Scammer worked in Oakville Arrested

Members of the Halton Regional Police Service Regional Fraud unitĀ attended Edmonton, Alberta to take custody of a woman wanted in connection to a fortune telling scam that she previously ran in Oakville.

23 year-old Cynthia Burt operated in Oakville under the alias Jasmine BURT and its alleged that she defrauded her victim of approximately $200,000 by preying upon their vulnerable situation.

Cynthia Burt had advertised online as "Psychic Jasmine" and sometimes operated out of a storefront on Lakeshore Road in Oakville.

This was reported to police in December 2017 and shortly after the investigation started Cynthia Burt left Oakville and eventually relocated in Edmonton, Alberta.

Edmonton police also had reports of Burt defrauding victims in their area and she was ultimately arrested and charged in Alberta as well.

On June 14, 2019 fraud detectives attended Edmonton and returned Burt to Ontario where she was charged with:

  1. one count of Fraud Over $5000
  2. one count of Harassing Phone Calls

She will be appearing in Milton court on July 23, 2019.

Detectives believe there may be more victims and or witnesses of this fortune telling scam. They would appreciate them contacting the lead investigator Detective Constable Taylor Meyer at 905-825-4777 ext. 8765.
