Ontario is introducing a year-long pilot that will use electronic highway signs to show drivers nearby transit information and promote alternative travel options, to help manage congestion and get people where they’re going sooner.
On October 17, 2016 a sign will be installed on the QEW near Appleby GO station displaying information about upcoming GO train trips departing from that station. The information will factor in the time it takes to drive there, park and catch the next available train. By the end of the year, the pilot will expand to Bronte and Oakville GO stations. As part of the pilot, technologies will be evaluated that determine real-time parking availability at GO stations. This information could also be displayed on the signs.
“People who live and work across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area want less traffic congestion. By promoting alternative transit options like GO and UP Express, we’re taking action to help keep the region moving,” commented Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation
In November, highway signs along Highway 401 and the QEW approaching Highway 427 will advertise the Union Pearson Express (UP Express) travel times between Toronto Pearson Airport and Union station. UP Express trains make the trip in 25 minutes, with trains departing every 15 minutes.
People in Oakville and Halton Region will see the tangible benefits of transit and be able to make more accurate travel choices. This initiative will help more people when the pilot rolls out to include Bronte and Oakville GO stations.
