Today the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released results showing Halton District School Board students outperforming the province in Grade 9 Academic and Applied Mathematics, and on the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).
For Grade 9 Math there are different assessments for students in the academic and applied courses. On the Grade 9 Academic Math assessment, 91% of students achieved the provincial standard, a decrease of one percentage point over the previous year's result. The provincial average increased by one percentage point to 85% of students achieving the provincial standard. In total there were 3,334 students enrolled in the Academic Math course in 2013-2014.
For the 648 students in the Applied Math course, 56% attained the provincial standard in 2013-2014, a one-year increase of 9%. The provincial result increased by three percentage points of students achieving the provincial standard.
“It is important to note that 85% of our Grade 9 students met the provincial standard or a B grade or better, in their program of choice, either academic math or applied math,” says David Euale, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board. “Our teachers and program staff continue to focus on math instruction at both the elementary and secondary levels.”
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) results for 2013-2014 were also released today. The Halton District School Board’s success rate for students writing the test for the first time increased by one percentage point to 90%, while the provincial average was 83% of students.
“As literacy is a measured criteria for graduation, it is reassuring to know that 90% of our students have achieved this standard on their first attempt at the test,” adds Euale. “In addition to the success on first attempts at the test, results indicate that an additional 314 students achieved the standard on their second attempt. This means that in the Grade 10 cohort, 97% of Halton students have met the literacy standard.”

Oakville's statistics for those who participated for the first time, were fully eligible, and who passed the Ontario Secondary Literary Test taken in Grade 10.
