Lakeshore Road Bridge Construction Update: July 2017 | Town of Oakville

The reconstruction of the Lakeshore Road Bridge in downtown Oakville is well underway and expected to be completed in December 2017 as scheduled.

“Crews are working hard and meeting deadlines, but there’s a lot of work still left to be done,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during construction and remind you that it is business as usual in downtown Oakville.”

The reconstruction of the Lakeshore Road Bridge began in January 2017 and is an important first step in the town’s larger Lakeshore Road East reconstruction project. Since the new year a lot of work on has been done including removal of the existing concrete deck and steel girders, repairs to the existing piers, and replacement of the bridge abutments. Once the abutments were completed, structural steel was installed and concrete poured.New steel girders are now being installed. High definition time-lapse construction cameras are still on site to document progress and additional footage will be posted on the town’s website this summer.

Once complete, the new bridge will include two travel lanes and bikes lanes. There will also be a wider pedestrian sidewalk with a barrier wall to separate the sidewalk and vehicular traffic. New pedestrian railings and lookouts will be included as well as LED lighting.

With Lakeshore Road East (Navy Street to Allan Street) coming to the end of its lifespan and needing a major reconstruction, the town undertook extensive research and public consultation to identify broader opportunities to improve traffic, beautify streets and improve pedestrian/cycle ways in the downtown. In October 2015, Council approved the Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project as part of the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study (DTS).

Additional information will be posted online as the projects progress.
