Man fatally shot by Halton Regional Police Officer at Oakville's Monte Carlo Inn

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a fatal police shooting in Oakville. The SIU immediately takes over a case if a police officer has shot and killed an individual.

The current information from the SIU is that at approximately 5:30 AM this morning, Halton Regional Police Officers responded to call from the Monte Carlo Inn, 374 South Service Road East by the QEW and Trafalgar Road.

An altercation between a 41 year-old man and a police officer ensued. The officer discharged his weapon, which struck the man. EMS were called, at which time it was decided to transport the man to the Hamilton General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Oakville Trafalgar Hospital though considerably closer is not equipped to handle this kind of trauma. The closest hospital to be able to treat this level of trauma is Hamilton General.

A total of three forensic investigators along with seven addition investigators have been assigned to this case. They are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or are familar with the man who was shot are asked to call the SIU at 416-622-1965 or 800-787-8529 extension 1965.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
